Acidalia Planitia: It doesn't have large geological features visible from space, but even areas we consider "flat" have local terrain grades. Consider the Sahara desert as seen from space, then imagine standing atop a dune and falling forward.

Hello Mr.Weir. I'm a huge fan of The Martian and I personally think humour is the only way to best experience life. But, do you think the book would still work if the protagonist had taken a deep, no-nonsense, contemplative view? Did you ever visualize The Martian on a serious emotionally exploratory note, darkly observant, possibly with a nihilistic twist leaving readers with despair for earthly life let alone Mars?
