faith ☾ Yeah, you're right, nanites are never really elaborated upon. I'm speculating here, but I think that they are tiny robots injected into every citizen's bloodstream, presumably at birth. As explained in the book, they release morphine to numb pain, heal injuries, speed metabolism, and release hormones/chemicals which are intended to promote mental well-being. They work for the most part on their own but can be controlled by a doctor or a certain device, whose name has slipped my mind for the moment. That's really all I know, although the next books may have more information on the nanites.
