I think people should read books that interest them! The subject matter probably won't be meaningful to a child or tween reader, but a high schooler should be able to enjoy this book. I recommend it especially for teens and adults who listen to Japanese Breakfast, want to become professional rock stars, enjoy Korean food, have one or more Asian American parents, sometimes visit family members who speak a different language than they do, or love their parents despite having a rocky relationship with them. It might also be a good pick for a teen or adult who has watched a loved one die of cancer, although it also might be triggering, rather than affirming, to read about another painful, medicalized death.
If a teen reads this book, I might recommend they also read the fiction book "Frankly in Love" by David Yoon for another perspective on some similar issues.
