Slick
Slick asked Brian Staveley:

Why are Leeches hated so much? Does being one have any side affects? What nifty Kennings can they do?

Brian Staveley Great question. Part of the answer has to do with our standard human hatred for things we don't fully understand and with the desire to demonize people who are unlike us. Witness the witch trials in Europe and America, for instance. More specific to the world of the books, however, people on the continents of Vash and Eridroa remember the age of the Atmani, the immortal Leach Lords who ruled over a golden age, then went made and plunged the world into generations of chaos, war, and destruction. The Atmani give the people a concrete historical precedent on which to hang their prejudice.
