Jordan Murphy
Jordan Murphy asked:

Is there much queerness in this book?

Shahira8826 None at all, the author doesn't even mention his partner's gender.
Dani @Shahira: Oh yes he does, he says it’s a woman!

@elizabeth and @Sean:

Thank you both for this (Sean’s review and Elizabeth’s comment). I have recently watched the series and the Adam Kay character was as unsympathetic as in the book. Ironically, just at the start of the episode where Shruti’s story took center stage, I actually said out loud to my wife ‘that guy is so toe-curlingly awful. If it wasn’t for the Shruti character I’d have given up on this by now…. I expect that’s why they wrote her in, she’s not really in the book’.

It turns out my dislike for the writer on a personal level was unsurprising: a gay man who pretends to be straight in his book then publically pokes fun at a reader who dared to say on Twitter exactly what I was thinking: ‘ Huh? They’ve made his character gay in the series?’ Googling this brings up a wall of public politeness (wokeness?) refusing to call him on this.

IF he had actually stuck 100% to referring to H in a gender-neutral way, it would be true that we had all wrongly assumed by default that he was straight.

IF in the series they had added an aside (there are plenty of those, it would have worked) to admit that his fear of coming out was so strong that he would later pretend H was a woman if he ever wrote a book, then that Twitter poster would never have posted what they did. It was only by googling which version was closer to the truth that I found that the Real Adam Kay is gay.

But it seems no one has called him on his passing for straight then laughing at people for believing him.

The only discussion of this I could find is here, where only one person states the truth:
