Considering his family history and the fact that Ms. George tends to identify Black characters as such, I think not. Regardless of Mark Phinney's race, what did Teo see in him? He's not terribly appealing and given her complicated romantic (for lack of a better term) situation it is difficult to figure that one out.

I agree with Diane. It seemed at one point that Mark's passion for Teo was one sided, and I could buy that, given his home life, but was very surprised when it seemed that Teo reciprocated. Couldn't understand that.

I think the attraction was definitely mutual. And Mark was very undeveloped as a character, so I like to believe he had attractive qualities we just didn’t see. I think Elizabeth George does best with characters built over time; I often feel that her secondary characters are one-dimensional and serve as placeholders for the plot rather than developed personalities.
