Why did Kevin McDonald email his wife at the end to get their stories straight about their whereabouts the night of the murder, if ultimately we find out they had nothing to do with it and we’re both completely in the dark?? Why would they need to be worried about what they tell police?

I agree though, the way it was worded was odd. Probably deliberately so as a red herring.(less)
