Can this be read as a standalone? Is this series more like companion novels?

Leserling Belana I read this without being aware of there being a first novel, and I didn't have the feeling I lacked information, so this can absolutely be read as a standalone.
Sarah Book 1 also does a little more world-building, explanation of terms, etc. The characters in this book are only side characters in Book 1, so it could be read alone, but will make more sense together.
Miriam It is a trilogy and this is book 2, so they should probably be read in order. However, book 1 did not end in a cliff-hanger and book 2 has different main characters than book 1 (the sister of the book 1 protagonist), so it may not be essential to read them in order.
Dana There is an overall plot to the trilogy, with everything not being resolved in book 1, as opposed to companion novels. So A Marvellous Light should probably be read first!
