April Henry First you have to have a finished book that is at least 35,000 words long (which is still kind of short for a book). Then you have to find a literary agent who will sell your book to an editor at a publishing house. It's a long process that might take a couple of years and will probably take more. Once you have an agent, you will probably stay together, but writing a book takes months, and often over a year.

Most writers aren't very famous, but that's good, as far as I am concerned. I have known some people who are recognized every where they go and it's not very fun to have people taking pictures of you (especially if you don't look your best) and posting them online. It's hard to have any time to yourself if you are out in public.
