I read it without picking up any of the rest because I found it at the thrift store. I understood it well enough. Though you don't know the girl he's trying to find but the plot seems to explain itself well enough throughout.
The author even says on the first page that it's possible someone can pick it up without reading the others though he does seem to prefer if people read the others first. I will be picking up the other 3 if I can but this was still a good read.
