Annerie Age 14 until you can't read anymore
Merla Miller Personally, I believe it should be categorized as YA although it has won children's literature awards. I don't feel the story is appropriate for anyone under 13. Too depressing.
TheBirdNerd I read it when I was 12. I think it depends on reader maturity , like what Mahnoor said. There is some swearing in it (not too bad, not like the 'f word' and stuff) but half of it is in German. The themes in it are also quite depressing (holocaust, Nazis , the war and death) but at the same time they are educational and written in such a delicate, poetical way. I don't know what the actual film is rated, but if they made the book into a film , keeping everything it , it would probably be a 12 or 13.
Mahnoor I read it when I was 13, but I think it really depends on the reader's own maturity. It has some swearing, but in German (though it is translated whenever it's introduced and mild violence, though.
