Did you ever consider making the main character female? Why or Why not?

I considered it when I was about halfway through the book, but I rejected the idea. She'd just be a woman who acts a lot like a guy. For the most part, when I envision a character, the gender comes with it right off the bat. For instance, I never considered a male commander. When I imagined the commander I got Commander Melissa Lewis.

First i have to say i loved the Book. I loved the sarcastic humor that Mark has and the fact that the Book is exciting yet funny. Also i really liked your short story The Egg and it was the reason i bought The Martian. I'd like to ask if you are writing on a new Book and if so is it in the same genre? Also, how did you do the research for the Book? It felt so realistic. Greetings from a big fan in Sweden.

Hi Andy, I loved your book. I'm intrigued about the level of research you must have done for it. I see from your website that you were naturally interested in space exploration before you wrote the book, but I'm keen to understand how you went about getting that level of detail in. Did you have any contacts inside the space exploration industry that you could bounce plot ideas off and figure out solutions with?
