Is there such a thing as a book that is fun to write? It's possible that I have been doing it wrong! Seriously, I am trying to remember if I have ever had fun while writing a book. When it's going well, I definitely feel a sense of intense engagement and there's nothing else I would rather be doing. I feel eager to write in the morning and eager to grapple with the problems of the novel at hand. When I think I have done a good job solving the problems, I feel proud and sometimes satisfied. I have occasionally felt pleasure at a phrase I think is particularly precise or an insight I think is original. But fun... FUN. Maybe I am not a "fun" person? Even when I was a little kid, I never really understood, for instance, recess. That said, I think the novel I felt the most satisfied while I was working on it is the one I just finished, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, which will be published in July. ALSO, there are parts of the publishing process that can be fun -- I enjoy the reveal of the cover (though this can occasionally be fraught); I enjoy conversations with a smart editor. Thank you for this question! (I think I had fun answering it, but I'm not sure.)

I’m enjoying the book but I noticed on page 147 Donkey Kong ia described as a ‘little Japanese Italian plumber’ - but that’s Mario, not Donkey Kong. I’m wondering if that was on purpose to make us pause or if you never played Donkey Kong and hence why the confusion? :)

I was on my morning commute on the ferry from Tiburon to San Francisco when I reached the part of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow where Tiburon became a part of the story. It seemed so random but made me so happy for such a small town to be featured! I have to know, have you spent time here?
