What does the term "yellow wife" mean, exactly?

Stevette Watkins I think the “wife” parts come from the fact that the mulatto women were the slave dealers’ means of obtaining some semblance of a family life. Remember when Pheby was told that no respectable man of means would marry their daughters off to them… that they were considered the pariahs of men because of their trade.
Andrea She is mulatto (mixed) and it is referring to her skin tone. "Yellow is/was a term to describe a light skinned person of white and black ancestry." After reading the book, not sure where the "wife" part comes from, though.
Kaleitha Johnson Agree with both answers below. Essex actually calls her that when he asks for her to not raise suspicion of their relationship.
The Dear Reader She was “high yellow” according to the earlier chapters. She was his wife although I’m not sure about the legality. The actual women it was based one shares the Jailer’s last name. Theirs a new book coming out about her, Mary Lumpkin.
