I did change the ending between the ebook and print editions. There were no plot changes. I just removed a scene that we didn't like very much.
I wouldn't say I was "pressured" to change it. The editing process is collaborative and my editor (Julian Pavia at Crown Publishing) convinced me that the scene was weak and needed replacing. The book is better for the change.

I read The Martian last spring and LOVED it. I also saw it as an engaging read for my hard to reach seniors. I am a public school English teacher in Virginia. I want multiple copies for my classroom library. Will you give me some? :-) It never hurts to ask. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I found the science in the book to be convincingly accurate, to the point where I really felt like I was learning survival techniques should I become stranded on Mars (I only say convincingly because I couldn't prove otherwise). How much time did you put into research to make it so accurate and what was that process like?
