It didn't really have a "first draft". I released it as a serial, so I would do multiple editing passes on each chapter before posting them. It took a total of three years to complete. Then another month or so of editing once Random House picked it up for print publishing.

If you had a hundred potatoes and 2 pre-packaged meals, wouldn't you use pieces of those delicious meals to flavor as many meals of potatoes as possible rather than just eating plain potatoes for days and days and then wolfing down a whole full-flavored meal? I think I would.
