In Isolate, discovered that you may have been subtle in the choice of character names. Steffan is crown in old German and Deckard is roofer in Dutch, so Crown Protector? Avraal Ysella is "modest flower of spring" , Axel Obredur is "worker for peace" and Ingella is "Daughter of Hero". Do more of the character names have subtle meanings of importance? P.S. Compiling characters and have 101 name thru Chapter 36.

Some of that subtlety is likely subconscious, because I often choose names by sound and "feel," and since I have at least a nodding acquaintance with several languages besides English and am married to an opera singer/director, I can't claim, at least consciously, all of the subtlety that shows up. But there are other character names with subtle meanings, as well as two out and out Tuckerizations [made with the approval of both individuals, who have a certain prominence in the F&SF field].

I recently attended (separate) readings by Andre Dubus (House of Sand and Fog) and Abigail Thomas (Safekeeping). Both mentioned that they do not write poetry, but read some every night. When asked, they said that it informs their writing and that they do it to refill their creative well. Thoughts?

What was behind your decision to refer to the main characters in Isolate by their last names? It was quite jarring, especially at the start, though I got used to it. Also, thank you so much for the new series - fascinating world and I enjoyed the first book thoroughly. Looking forward to more.
