Can you give any advice to any authors looking to research and write an authentic "hard-science" sci-fi story? Is it possible to pull it off if you're not already a domain expert with a strong educational background in the area you're writing about?

I really enjoyed the personality and mindset of the main character. Was it a conscious decision to portray him as courageous, optimistic and funny or is that a reflection of your own personality or possibly how you would feel in his situation? Thank you for a fantastic read, my 12 and 15 year old sons really enjoyed it as well!
