[Spoiler Alert] Why do you think the author decided to add the rape scene? Does it add anything to the characters' arcs? Does it propel the plot forward? Does anything result from that scene? Frau Elena, Jutta, and the other three girls were already obviously miserable. The reader has already experienced the cruelty of war. Why was the rape scene necessary?

The Nazis did terrible things but it did not justify what the Soviets did. - what, freed the world at the time when Americans rushed in at the end of the war and claimed the victory? How conveniently you have been rewriting world history to suit your American agenda and justify what you did in Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria and other country that has natural resources. REAL people understand war has no nationality, it's the face of the people who kill. I have heard of American soldiers raping women in Iraq and going to work, getting the drone out, bombing the whole village - children, babies, old people, women and all, peaceful population, then going home to fancy home in safety and having dinner like nothing ever happened.(less)
