Can this be read as a stand alone? Or is it necessary to read The Circle first?

Kathleen Hutchison I read it without having read/seen The Circle--with no confusion or need for additional information.
Ben M. Yes, but I would suggest reading The Circle, which is a great book. If not, at least watch the movie so you have some frame of reference to work from.
Rachel It's not necessary, but it will definitely add to your reading experience.
Sharilyn Neidhardt I don't think its necessary. Also, I hated the film.
Petey You 100% do not need to even know that The Circle exists to read and enjoy this book. Having read that book might enhance your "enjoyment" of this book, a little, but not necessary at all.
John Unlike most sequels, you don't get a lot from having read the first book. The recurring characters feel more like Easter eggs than necessary elements.
PamP Pieroni I read it as a standalone, not even realizing it was sort of a sequel to The Circle, and it was very easy to understand. It wasn't until I read a review that I realized one of the main characters was from The Circle.
Tobias Leenaert there's some characters that return from the first novel, but it can definitely be read stand alone
