I always thought that the Tree in the Garden of Eden was a pomegranate, not a fig tree? Definitely, not an apple tree, though, since this was a mistranslation.

I guess it depends on how you want to read the stories being told. Fact, fiction, parables, teachings, reasons to look for deeper meaning, truth...

One could even argue that the Garden of Eden itself is merely a metaphor.(less)
