Can someone explain why Robin spoke in italics, with no quotation marks?

Mika I was also trying to parse this out. My personal reading of this is it's a device Powers is using to emphasize how Robin and his mother have a unique world outlook that is inaccessible to Theo, the reader, or the rest of the world. A lot about Aly's motivations and thoughts are oddly mystical to Theo, but Robin is able to tap into her brain through the DecNef project. I'd love to know if anyone has any more nuanced or other ideas about this as well though
