Do you think of the plot and characters before you write your book or do the characters tell you their story?

It's a bit of a combination! To me, it feels like a blurry scene coming into focus. I have a general outline, and as the characters go through the story, they begin to tell me more about themselves, clarifying their intentions and helping propel the plot.
