Katherine Howe It's true the real Deliverance did survive the trials, and I had initially planned to have Livvy make a daring escape. But in the course of writing the novel, I realized that that ending felt wrong. It felt inauthentic, despite being "true." So I chose to do what the story required. That's the trick with historical fiction - balancing the demands of history with the demands of narrative.

How did you know you wanted to be an author? Not just have the random inspirations and dreams to write a novel, but the actual turning point where you turned your dream into work, into reality? What advice would you give to a dreamer who constantly has inspirations and ideas, even complete sentences, for a book that may never exist?

I took the historical fiction online MOOC from UVA/Coursera back in 2013 or 14 and really enjoyed your seminar in particular. I'm curious, as you've written more fiction do you find that you have a better idea what research will help your story? Or maybe better put: have you found you can streamline your research for a specific writing project? Love your books by the way.
