Not a mystery so much as an oddity. I've been writing a number of books lately involving genetic engineering. And in my own life I am a sort of genetic mess up with a mild spherocytosis and certain liver functions tbat don't make a lot of sense. But both of these things, under certain circumstances can be genetic advantages.
