Generally I just quit for a while. Then I think about the plot, characters, and where it's all going. Then I do something else and let it simmer. Usually it is because one of those two things isn't fleshed out in my mind enough. On rare occasions it's because I hated where I went with it, and i have to go back and start over from that point.
