I have not yet read the book but I have read through these responses and it seems that everyone says it would not be appropriate for a 12-year-old. Again, I haven't read it myself so I can't say for sure but I was surprised because it just won an Alex Award which is, "...given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The award is administered by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association." Just wanted to share that info with you as well, in case it helps any in making your decision. (less)
