I really want to read this book, but sexual assault is one of the things I have a really hard time reading about. So, how bad is the rape scene? Is it really explicit? Or is it vague and a sort of "this happened" scene?

It is explicit, toward the end of the book, and you can tell at the beginning of the chapter that this is the scene, if you want to skip that segment.
