Jenna asked S.M. McEachern:

How did Jack and Summer's characters came to your mind?

S.M. McEachern Hi Jenna! (and sorry for my late response!)

Both Jack and Sunny have a bit of me in them (and I think you meant Sunny? Summer was more of a minor character, although she plays a bigger role in book 3, New World Order, due out in January!).

Sunny is the determined, jaded teenager who's mad at the world (as she should be!), but learns that when she lets go of her anger, puts her energies into setting goals and begins to work with the people who can help her achieve those goals, that she can accomplish a lot. How does this relate to me? I was mad at the world once too, but when I finally stopped blaming everyone for my poverty, started setting goals and working toward them, I put myself through university.

Jack is the well-meaning, good hearted, ivory towerist who has his eyes opened. When he's the heir, living in the Dome, he thinks he knows it all and can be the saviour of the Dome. But then goes down into the Pit with Sunny and has his eyes opened. How does this relate to me? I had my eyes opened when I finished my degree in International Development, left my ivory tower, and then actually started working with "less developed" countries.

Hopefully that answers your question, but if it doesn't let me know. I'd be happy to give more details. And please feel free to get in touch any time. I'll be more diligent about checking "Ask the Author"! Thanks, Jenna.
