How do you know what's an unnecessary detail in a murder mystery until you get to the end??

I didn't find the book within the book boring, but I didn't find some parts outside of it, from the point of view of the former editor boring. Like the part where she was explaining the details of what she wanted to change about the book. Ironically, I found that boring!
