Goodreads asked Erik Goddard:

How do you get inspired to write?

Erik Goddard Sometimes when I see someone out in public, I think: there's a character. The way she moved or put out her cigarette or the way that guy pushed that kid out of the way with his cane. Or from dreaming. I get a lot of ideas from dreams. Sometimes when I'm having a conversation, or reading a book, or looking at a painting, I'll get inspired by a thought that occurs when that connection happens between a creator and a viewer. Sometimes I'll see a news item, a cloud, or a car. Anything can kick off a thought.
