Hi, Could someone please tell me what on earth is going on in this book? What is the deal with leaving a card in the cafe? Even after Googling it carefully (I'm still listening to it in Audible) I still don't understand wtf Koller Kibber is. It's really frustrating.. I'd like to love this book. But i hate not understanding something.

In days gone by, specific newspapers would employ a man (yes it would be a man) to go around holiday resorts and if you spotted him and challenged him, you won a monetary prize. I think you had to have a copy of the correct newspaper on you when you made the challenge.
The leaving a card thing is just an extension of the competition in that if you find the card you also win but from memory finding the card was a lesser prize.
Koller Kibber is just the name the paper gave to their man.
A lot of the references in Brighton Rock are of their time.

Ah ..Seeing it in print does help. Kolley Kibber went right over my head as I was listening it, Who was dead I though? Kolley kibber, Fred? Hale? What? Is Hale Fred? Now I get it...
Also, The Messenger.. (if it had been The Chronicle, I would have understood it was a paper, not a person! Shililngs and guineas as well...Not an audible read.
