I would, there are little moments in the previous book that help make the reading experience of this book so much better. You're going to wanna know how Fox and Hannah got to where they are. Also, Piper and Brendan are absolutely adorable in: It Happened One Summer, and are mentioned a good amount in Hook, Line, and Sinker. :)

While it theoretically COULD be read as a stand alone, it's better if you've read It Happened One Summer first. Fox and Hannah meet in IHOS, and HL&S picks up basically exactly after IHOS ends, so if you haven't read the first book you might be a bit confused.

i didn't and i was fine
Laura Maria
I read it without reading the first one and I was totally fine. :)

Yes because a reference is made almost right away to the gift of a record and if you read the first one it makes sense.

To FULLY enjoy the development of their relationship and understand the dynamic of the other characters Fox and Brendan and Hannah and Piper... I think you should read it first. BUT you won't be SO confused or miss too much if you decide not to. Also It Happened One Summer is FANTASTIC! I loved it and Piper is annoying for maybe a few chapters, but she turns into a great and likable female character.

I read it as a standalone and enjoyed it. I started reading book 1 after I finished this one, but Piper started off so dislikeable (and book 1 is about her) that I closed it and decided not to continue.

You *could* read it as a standalone, but I did that and was confused because I'd obviously missed part of/the beginning of the story.
