Is it better to edit as you go or to write a rough draft without stopping?

Thanks for the question! I suggest people edit as they go. I know many other writing instructors suggest to finish a first draft first. However, with books as complex as the ones I write, if I were to do that it would require months of rewrites since the story's trajectory could go off in all sorts of irrelevant directions. I'm gripped by PAWN. I wanted to stop by and say thanks for proving that great literature involving the dark side of humanity can be written without filling the page with profanity. Kudos! Here's where I get to employ the mandatory question mark: how are you able to tap into humanity's dark side without being negatively effected by it?

Hi Steven, how did you develop your, for lack of a better term, choppy/stream of consciousness writing style for your characters' thoughts? I haven't seen any other authors do that (not to the extent you do at least), but I love it. It makes it seem like everything is happening in much of a 'real-time' scenario. Was there another author with a similar style that inspired you? Or have you always written like that?
