I’m not a big fan of romance in novels, but this one wasn’t too bad. It has sort of a love-square, but it’s not too cheesy. In book 1, there are very few kissing scenes and not too much flirtatious banter. It’s certainly not overbearing. If you’re looking for a YA fantasy with romance in it, this is a good one, but it doesn’t play out like your typical romance.
In other words, it definitely has romance, but it’s a tolerable amount (whether you’re looking for it or looking to avoid it). Hope this answers your question!
