Lauren asked Mary Higgins Clark:

How do you get lawmakers/lawyers and law-enforcement to answer specific questions? I keep getting stonewalled by, "WHAT did you say this was for? And, WHO are you?" and "I can't answer that over the phone, we'll have to set up a consultation (for $150!)". Any advice, so I can move forward in this area, would be greatly appreciated.

Mary Higgins Clark On some of the books where there were specifics in law enforcement, I hired two retired detectives. I would send them chapter by chapter, and they would let me know if I was making a mistake. For example, in one of the chapters, I had the detective carrying an umbrella and walking 10 blocks from one witness to another. My expert said, "Mary, detectives do not walk. We have a car. Detectives do not carry umbrellas: we may have to reach for our guns." Needless to say, I made the changes!
