Goodreads asked D.A. Holley:

How do you get inspired to write?

D.A. Holley Most often, I take a walk. I find the alone time, a little music and some exercise get the ideas flowing. I used to do a lot of brainstorming on the way to work. I'd walk a mile every day to get there, so it was a good twenty minutes in which I could come up with ideas.

When I was living in Minneapolis, I'd take the train to work and back again. Sometimes, I'd take it just because. But I'd always be writing when I was on it. Once, I took a trip with my ex boyfriend from end to end on it. We spent that entire time writing. We stopped off at Minnehaha Falls and the Mall of America, but otherwise that was what we did, just road the train and wrote our books. It's weird, but I find while I'm in motion the ideas tend to flow a little better. And being in an environment where pretty much anything can happen is helpful in that regard, too. The Light Rail was kind of the best of both worlds in that I could do my writing, but if I ran into a road block, the people watching might just inspire a feature in a character I had on the page, or inspire a new character or scenario entirely.
