Lee asked this question about Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage:
Is this an appropriate read for a 13-year-old boy? He is interested in arctic exploration. I just want to be mindful of cursing and/or any other inappropriate content.
JayD Absolutely. 13-years-old is the perfect age. There is no cursing or other inappropriate content beyond the scariness of the trek.

Somewhere in the book, the author briefly mentions that there was very little talk about sex, because the environment 'didn't invite such talk'. (I can't remember the exact words). References to wives, mothers and girlfriends tended to be wholesome and nostalgic.

There is a brief account of one of the doctors having to amputate the toes of a frost-bite victim (mercifully with aesthetic), but it's not dwelled upon and the patient upon coming round merely asks for a cigarette and then gamely carries on without complaint.

For the record, I have the 1999 Tyndall House version (ISBN 0842308245), which says: This work has been edited in content for a Christian audience. I have no idea what that means. Anyone know?(less)
