Hi Mark, I am currently 20% into Red Sister and I am really enjoying it. This is an odd question, but I was wondering if you found inspiration in The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski? I was profoundly moved by that book many years ago, and the early pages of this book had some echoes of the same type of situation -- an orphan child alone and on a brutal road. Just curious.

Fantasy has a lot of orphans and their roads are generally difficult ones!

I just want to say how much I ADORE your books. They have an atmosphere unlike any other that feels strangely comforting to be in - I'm always excited to return to your worlds again. I don't know how you do it - weaving such complex stories that are just as deep as they are light-hearted. I thought I may as well ask - how do you do it!? Where do the stories come from?
