They are essentially separate. There are a few characters from the first who appear in passing in the second. (FWIW technically this book does give away parts of the plot of Unnatural Magic, like obviously character X made it through the first book if they are mentioned here.)

I read this book without reading Unnatural Magic first. Everything made total sense, and it felt like reading a standalone.
