Is it a good idea to read this out of order? I've read the first trilogy so far (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn), but haven't read the Icewind Dale trilogy yet let alone anything recent. If I skip ahead this far will the story be too far advanced in the timeline? I plan to read the whole series, but was just thinking about skipping ahead to these new releases.

Angela Molina Definitely read them in order, the timeline of all stories spans nearly 2 centuries. You will miss out on a lot, and reading this far ahead will ruin the rest of the stories for you. All sets are as follows (# of books in each set in parentheses):

Dark Elf Trilory (3)
Icewind Dale trilogy (3)
Legacy of the Drow (4)
Paths of Darkness (4)
Hunter's Blades (3)
Transitions (3)
Neverwinter Saga (4)
The Companions (1)
Companions Codex (3)

I would also recommend reading the books and forming your own opinion of them (instead of taking the other comments to heart) because I for one thought all the books on Drizzt were awesome.
Sean I would advise going to the Icewind Dale Trilogy, simply because of the higher quality of those books compared to the latter additions. After Icewind, things gradually bottom out (The Spine of the World being my low point).

As far as missing things, you'll probably miss out on character introduction and development. Plus, some things come back. If you didn't know what they were in the first place, that diminishes the effect somewhat.
Logan Schade As Sean said it slowly bottoms out until "The Spine of the World" but it quickly comes back up to be even better than the start when you reach The Hunter's Blades Trilogy.
