I think it's identity politics and fear of being called out for a misrepresentation. She protected herself, even though it's a work of fiction. This was smart. It is overwhelmingly clear that she wrote the book with a specific mental illness in mind. But she removed the diagnosis (which I guarantee you was there during original drafts) to protect the conversation around the book. It has artistic merit either way, but I think it's sad she felt the need to do that. (less)
