Goodreads asked Nicholas King:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Nicholas King First, understand that it's a long journey, not a short run.
Second, if this is your passion, pursue it regardless of any naysayers.
Third, put your butt in a chair and write.

The best piece of advice I ever received was from Johnny Atomic when I told him I wanted to be a writer. He said to me, "You know you suck, right?"
I nodded my head slowly, not quite getting what he was talking about.
"Good. If you know that you suck right now, you can get better. If you start off thinking you're already a great writer, you're never going to improve."

So, to aspiring writers: accept that you're not going to be a great writer right at the start. You're not supposed to be. But with time and practice, you can become great. It's a job. A fun job but still a job. Treat it like fun work and keep at it.
