JC Sánchez Emilfork asked Brian Herbert:

What do you think about the adaptation of David Lynch now? What was good and bad? What were the Frank Herbert's thoughts about it and the chance to gain new fans where no one knew Dune? (By the way In my country (Chile) nobody knew anything about Dune till the movie arrive in theaters, I spend many years searching the book like the "holy grail of science fiction") Thanks

Brian Herbert Frank Herbert saw a 5-hour version of the movie before it was edited and released, and he said it was a “visual feast.” He liked the artistic elements that David Lynch (an artist) had added to the picture. Dad did take issue with some of the plot changes, just as DUNE fans did – but overall Frank Herbert was pleased to see his great novel finally reach the screen. [See my biography of Frank Herbert, DREAMER OF DUNE, for details of the numerous failed attempts by different production companies to bring DUNE to the screen – before Lynch and Dino De Laurentiis became involved.] Shortly after the release of David Lynch’s “Dune” in December, 1984, the paperback edition of DUNE rocketed to the top of bestseller lists, and was #1 on the New York Times list. I agree that DUNE is the “holy grail of science fiction.” I have often said that DUNE is to science fiction what THE LORD OF THE RINGS is to fantasy. They are the most admired literary works in their respective genres, and have sold millions of copies all over the world.
