Does anyone know if the orphanage in this book is based on an actual orphanage(s) of the day? I wonder how true the force feeding and other awful treatments were. I looked up interviews with the author but haven’t come across anything where she discusses how much of that she created vs. if she based some of it on research.

I do know a woman in Memphis regularly stole and sold children (Georgia Tann) and had implicit if not explicit help from hospital and police officials. So it is surely possible. But did it happen? I wish the author would tell us more about her inspiration (less)
