I began by thinking of a situation - a young woman recently bereaved and the appearance of a stranger at the graveside. The rather complicated plot grew from there but the master-stroke of the book for me was basing the main action in that amazing city of Paris, conjured up largely from the memories created during a wonderful school holiday when I was 16!
