(view spoiler)[Can you explain your reasoning for depicting Ruby's Black foster parents Lena and Demi in the way that you did in "The Burning Girls"? I'm very curious about that. (hide spoiler)]

I talked about this in a podcast recently and my answer was that all people can do terrible things regardless of race, religion or sexuality and I try to reflect that in my books. I don't discriminate when I write my characters - they're all capable of good and bad. The church Lena and Demi attend is based upon one I knew in Nottingham so I also wanted to explore Jack's position as a white vicar and have her question herself whether she is being subconsciously racist. It's a fine line to tread as a white writer but I feel that if authors can't ever portray a BAME, trans, gay or disabled character as anything other than entirely 'good' then it would be terribly patronising. And if you've read any of my other books, you'll know that I have plenty of straight, white characters doing plenty of appalling things. In fact, I very rarely write *any* characters that are entirely good! I hope that answers your question. x

Hey C.J., Love your books! I've read The Chalk Man in just one day, the same with The Hiding Place (It's called "What Happened to Annie" in Brazil). The question I have is, as an writer myself, do you have any tips to creating creepy stories? I love the feel your books have, would be awesome to be able to incite similar reactions with my own writing. Keep the good work and hugs from Brazil!

I came across The Chalk Man when browsing my Kindle Store. I am notoriously picky about what I read, possibly because Stephen King is my favourite author and I have all his books - a hard act to follow. The synopsis for Chalk Man attracted me and as I started reading I immediately thought of Stephen King? I had no idea until afterwards of your infuences. Brilliant read, now starting Annie Thorne. Thank you!!
