Well, you could, but it wouldn't make much sense. In the first book all the characters are introduced, and in New Moon there is a major event that Bella goes through with that might be a little boring if you don't know how Edward and Bella's relationship was in the first book. However, if you've seen the Twilight movie, you are good to go.
