It is a refrelction on purpose, roles, relationship, success, growing and aging, among other things. It is left empty in many places, to be filled with our experiences and points of view. I've read it is going to be adapted as a movie. Most likely a lot of questions will be answered there, but if that happens it will be like watching Sodenbergh's Solaris after Tarkovsky's
