Nadia Hashimi Great question. There are many non profits running shelters for women as well as orphanages for children. One particular organization I have spoken with offered some insight into their work. Of course, the approach varies depending on what situation a woman is fleeing. In some cases, the shelter will do what they can to keep the woman safe and hide her whereabouts. In other cases the group sometimes seeks to mediate between husband and wife and offer counseling to the abusive spouse since the harsh reality is that divorce is not a good option for many women in Afghanistan. It puts the custody of their children in jeopardy and stigmatizes them in society. If they can find a way to rehabilitate the men and keep the women in a safe household, it ends up being a better solution for everyone.
